What are Coping Skills?

Coping skills are ways we deal with the harshness of reality. Sometimes the days are harder than others and we need something like an activity, food item, or even a hug to get us through tough times. Anything can be a coping skill, as long as it is positive. I once had someone tell me that when they feel overwhelmed, they think of the color pink.

That's right PINK! But hey, if that’s what gets them through the rough patches, that’s great.

What are some other coping skills you might be able to use? There is physical activity, deep breathing, meditation, listening to relaxing sounds, grounding techniques, and so much more.


Does everyone have a coping skill? Yes, some are more obvious than others. Thinking of the color pink may be a not-so-obvious skill and going fishing every other weekend with friends may be more apparent.
